Convent Walk

Abbotsford Convent

Walking tours will be organised at 4pm on Monday September 27 around the Abbotsford convent area. The tour guides will be Good Shepherd people who have an historic connection with the site and who understand the significance of certain areas.

The convent is a major landmark in the Abbotsford area. For many years, the high walls of the Abbotsford Convent have created a sense of mystery and provoked curiosity about the goings-on among the tall, steepled Gothic building set within.

The former Convent of the Good Shepherd Sisters, one of the most important Catholic institutional complexes constructed in Victoria, is notable for its scale and extent, the architectural qualities of the buildings and its range of building types.

For over a century, the site was the “mother house” of the Sisters of Good Shepherd in Australia and New Zealand, enclosing a largely self-sufficient and closed community of nuns and the women and girls they cared for.

It is now an invaluable resource for the arts community; for training and education; employment; an incubator for creativity and the sharing of ideas, and a place for community participation and enjoyment.
